The recent ChatGPT outage has rekindled discussions about the growing dependence on artificial intelligence (AI) and, more generally, on well-known digital platforms in a world that is becoming more and more driven by AI.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of these technologies and the ripple impact their failure can have on international operations, as AI becomes an increasingly important aspect of daily life, powering everything from customer service to content creation.

The outage prevented hundreds of users from accessing essential features and affected ChatGPT, OpenAI’s API, and Sora services. Despite the final restoration of services, the disruption exposed serious weaknesses in the technology infrastructure. Concerns regarding the stability of Meta’s platforms, like as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, were further heightened by outages that occurred during the same time period.

In India, ChatGPT is still not widely used for important business applications, despite its popularity. In India, there were 377 complaints about the ChatGPT outage at its peak, whereas there were 27,645 in the US. This suggests that India was comparatively less affected by the disturbance.

Although ChatGPT is becoming more and more popular in India, most users are in Western nations. The majority of end applications are geared toward the West, despite India being a resource and skill powerhouse. Since GenAI is now mostly utilized for resource and knowledge management, the impact of such interruptions is currently minimal. The development of agentic AI that can make decisions on its own, however, may make these disruptions much more significant.

The recent outages on popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp highlight how ingrained digital services are in our day-to-day existence. Even if technical difficulties may be the source of these outages, they also serve as a reminder of how important it is to have safe and durable IT infrastructures, particularly as AI-powered services continue to grow internationally.
