India’s imports of coal increased by 11.4% to 121.1 million tonnes (MT) during the current fiscal year’s April–August period. In the same period last year, 108.7 MT of coal had been imported by the nation.

Imports of coal and coke totaled 121.18 MT between April and August of 2024, which is approximately 11.4 percent more than the 108.74 MT imported in the same period the previous year. Reduced coal demand and excess domestic coal supply in the system resulted in lower import volumes during the month under review. It is anticipated that coal imports will stay low until the holiday season, when energy consumption is expected to spike.

In FY24, India imported 268.24 MT of coal, an increase of 7.7%. In the first five months of the current fiscal year, the nation produced 384.08 million tonnes of coal, an increase of 6.48 percent. 360.71 MT were produced between April and August of FY24.
