The proportion of exports that are mostly distributed digitally has been increasing during the outbreak. According to data from the joint World Bank and World Trade Organisation study ‘Trade in Services for Development,’ they increased from being 26.4% of exports in India in 2019 to 28.6% in 2022.

According to the report, India’s contribution to global commercial service exports climbed from 1.95% in 2005 to 4.44% in 2022. In 2005, China had a greater share, and it still holds a lead. But the distance has closed. In the same time frame, China’s share rose from 2.94 to 5.29%. China’s proportion in worldwide commercial service exports decreased from 5.52% in 2021 while India’s share climbed in 2022 compared to the previous year. In India, the services sector employed around 144 million people in 2021, according to figures from the International Labour Organisation (ILO). In overall employment, the proportion of services has climbed from 21.6% in 1991 to 30.7% in 2021.

During the same time frame, industry saw a rise from 14.9% to 25.3%. Agriculture remains the main source of employment, but its overall share has decreased from 63.5% in 1991 to 44% in 2022.
