India is making steady progress toward becoming a major industrial power in the world. The industry has changed quickly thanks to advanced technology, talented personnel, and robust legislative backing. Manufacturing is a crucial economic pillar that employs over 27.3 million people and contributes 17% of the country’s GDP.

The industry is predicted to nearly treble by FY30, reaching $1.30 trillion at a compound annual growth rate of 18%. By the end of the decade, our percentage of the world’s goods exports is expected to increase from 1.7% to over 3%. This growth is driven by in-house R&D, sophisticated automation, and system-level innovation rather than cheap labor. The global supply chain landscape is also changing as a result of geopolitical changes. India’s proportion of US imports increased from 2.3% in 2019 to 2.8% in 2022 as reliance on China declines, while China’s share dropped from 18.1% to 13.4%. Production is increasingly being anchored in India by multinational behemoths like Apple, Samsung, Foxconn, and Micron.

India’s readiness for industrial transformation is indicated by initiatives in sectors like defense procurement, green hydrogen, semiconductors, and battery storage.

India’s competitive advantage on the international scene is also being strengthened by the government’s emphasis on green and sustainable production, particularly as investors, consumers, and business-to-business buyers place a higher value on ecologically friendly sourcing and operations.

India generates the most engineers in the world, with about 1.5 million produced each year. Strong English proficiency and a median age of only 28 indicate a robust talent pool. Education and industry demands, however, continue to diverge, particularly in fields like R&D, automation, and systems integration that are essential to advanced manufacturing.

Government-led skilling initiatives, business partnerships, and an increasing innovation-driven engineering culture are all helping to close this gap. When industry demands and capabilities coincide, India produces world-class manufacturing. India’s development into a manufacturing powerhouse will depend heavily on its ability to fully utilize its engineering capabilities.

India has the potential to become the industrial backbone of the world if talent, capital, and policy are all aligned properly.
