The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to radiology and oncology is gaining traction and aiding in the early identification of cancer. However, experts believe a long-term answer may still be a way off.

India’s first AI-driven Precision Oncology Centre (POC) was recently opened by Bengaluru’s Apollo Cancer Centre. With the use of AI, this center aims to deliver prompt and accurate oncology care, including accurate diagnosis, insights, cancer risk assessment, treatment plans, etc. Numerous healthcare organizations have started researching the integration of AI models in healthcare.

Artificial intelligence systems can examine radiological scans, including CT and mammograms, and identify minute irregularities that could potentially signal the early stages of cancer.

Manufacturers of medical devices believe that this is an essential tool for treating cancer early on. Early cancer therapy is critical, and AI can help healthcare providers deliver accurate diagnosis and treatment. In turn, early identification can help physicians launch therapies promptly, greatly increasing the likelihood of a successful course of therapy and recovery.

AI makes personalized treatment possible by analyzing large datasets, such as genetic data and patient histories, and detecting genetic markers and risk factors linked to certain cancers.

There are problems with data collection worldwide when integrating AI models with cancer diagnosis. AI currently may not add any value in oncology as compared to human intelligence. “A diverse dataset is necessary for accurate risk profiling of potential cancer patients using AI.” In India, using AI to detect cancer is still not common practice. “While it’s too early to make it standard practice, some centers are implementing AI into mammography reporting for breast cancer.”
