The new EV Policy 2025, which aims to increase the percentage of EV registrations to 30% of new vehicle registrations by 2030, was approved by Maharashtra, which ranks second among states in terms of EV sales. In order to increase adoption, the new EV policy also aims to improve the charging infrastructure, which would cost ₹1,995 crore.
The 2021 EV policy cost approximately ₹930 crore. In 2024, 12% of all EV sales in India came from Maharashtra. Incentives would now be available for a wider range of vehicle types, including huge commercial trucks that emit a lot of pollutants. “Private buses would now be eligible for the subsidy, when previously only state transport undertaking buses were. Along with trailers, dumper trucks, agri-trailers, and other vehicles, trucks and utility vehicles utilized by corporations and mahanagar palikas will also be included.
The state administration has also chosen to make a number of important highways toll-free for EVs in an effort to promote EV purchases. These highways include the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Nagpur Highway), the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Since it opened to the public, Atal Setu, the nation’s longest sea bridge, has seen an average of 23,000
cars per day in traffic over the course of a year. In addition, all PWD highways would gradually eliminate tolls. The actual toll-waiver would be in addition to the EV policy’s ₹1,995 crore expenditure.
The infrastructure for charging vehicles has not kept up with the increase in the number of vehicles, particularly in places with high population densities like Mumbai. The plan is to increase the infrastructure for charging both on roads and inside cities.
The urban development agency would designate particular places for recycling used EV batteries in solid waste management regions and dumping yards. The state government must make sure that charging outlets are available on even the most distant routes and highways. This is a positive step that will increase the purchase of both personal and business vehicles. In terms of operating costs, it makes more sense for commercial vehicles.
